Pray for religious freedom in Russia

Since the inception of the new Russian religious laws severely restricting evangelism in Russia, we are seeing more attempts by the authorities to silence Russian believers and their foreign guests and limit their ability to worship freely in Russian churches. Please read the following link. Pray for Russian believers and foreigners of faith for this harassment against them to end.

Update on missionary to Russia, Don Ossewaarde's appeal

Thank you for praying for missionary to Russia, Don Ossewaarde, regarding his legal appeal to his conviction for violating new anti-missionary activity laws. Here is what I received from him regarding the appeal case that was held in Russia on Monday, 19 September. He writes:

"Short version of the story.

The judge read all the documents.
We said our words, the policeman said his words.

The woman judge was afraid, I think, to make a decision. She was surprised that there were so many visitors in the courtroom. We had six people there from our group; there were about 15 more from other churches in Oryol. Two men from the US embassy came from Moscow to observe. I had two lawyers from Moscow with me.Three journalists were there. One had a TV camera. Another had one of those big long microphones that you see on TV.

The judge said that maybe the witnesses who were questioned by police on August 14th ought to be brought to court to say something. She postponed the proceedings until September 30th, to give a chance to find those three people, and ask them to come to court.

My lawyer says that was just a lame excuse by the Judge to buy some time so she could consult with her superiors.

The lawyers, journalists, and the embassy men all plan to return on Sept 30th.
We will probably have even more church people there on that day.

So no decision for now.

Don Ossewaarde"

Now you know better how to pray.

Urgent prayer needed

As you know missionary Don Ossewaarde, missionary in Russia was fined $700 under the new anti missionary activity laws. A Russian Christian advocacy law firm is representing him and have appealed his case. His appeal is coming before the court on 19 September 2016, in just a few days. His case will be landmark in its ruling. Pray that the appeals court we'll find that the charges against Don under this new law are unconstitutional. A ruling in Don's favor will benefit all Christians in Russia.

Another example of recent religious persecution in Russia

Please read the link below. It seems that with the change in religious law in Russia that groups who oppose religious freedom in Russia have been emboldened and or becoming more aggressive in their persecution of Russians who follow a faith system of their choosing.

Prayer needed hospitalized in Frederick Maryland

Would ask that you please continue to pray for me as I have been admitted to the hospital in Frederick Maryland for a severe cellulitis caused by bacteria. I was in the emergency room on Thursday and sent home for two days coming back Saturday when they realized that I needed to be admitted for continuous IV antibiotic therapy. Have been in the hospital since Saturday and doctors think I may need at least one maybe two more days before they let me go home.

Pray for Bonnie and the kids. We have been on the road preaching in churches. Have already had to cancel one meeting and may need to cancel another. Please pray for fast healing so we can get back on the road into new churches who are willing to consider supporting our minister.

We were visiting friends on Tuesday afternoon when I came down very sick with flulike symptoms. I'm so very thankful for our friends kindness and hospitality toward me and my family. Without their help in allowing us to stay with them during my admission we would've been in a world of hurt. The Lord is good. And good sincere friends are far and few between. I cherish and love mine. Thank you Mr. And Mrs. Day!

What we understand about new changes to Russian law regarding freedom of religion

The following I received recently from Bro. Kevin Jones, Missionary in Krasnoyarsk. He and I have worked off and on together in Siberia for the last 18 years. I have been in consultation with him regarding the recent changes to Russian law concerning religious freedom in Russia. This seems to be the best present day understanding of the recent changes to Russia’s law on religion and of the ramifications Russian christians and foreign missionaries could face for evangelistic/missionary activity in Russia. Bro. Jones is to meet with a lawyer who has specialized in representing christian clients in Russian courts to consult further regarding the specific changes to Russia’s law on freedom of conscience and religion.

Bro. Jones writes:

Law on Religious Freedoms
The new law on religious freedom is a serious change in Russia and a matter for prayer. The law will go into effect on July 20. Here is what we know so far:
- Russian nationals can freely witness to whomever they want to about their personal faith, whether via social media or personal contact. (one on one basis)
- We as missionaries can freely witness to whomever we want to about our personal faith, whether via social media or personal contact. (one on one basis)
- Evangelistic outreach (passing out literature or holding meetings in public areas on behalf of a religious organization) is permitted IF you have a letter from that registered organization (church) stating that you are acting on its behalf. The violation fine is up to $800, and possible deportation for foreigners.
- Houses and apartments can no longer be used as venues for evangelistic outreach, but can be used for gatherings and Bible studies among believers.

We have a meeting in the next week or so with a lawyer to find out more. Thank you for praying!!
